DUNKIRK, FRANCE – 1 JUNE 1940 – 3:06 P.M.

The boy’s lungs were burning and his eyes streaming with tears.
He had to get to England. It was now or never. The smoke was all around him, acrid cordite and sulphurous petrol. He kept on running, every breath a sharp stab in his chest. He had to keep going, had to reach the water’s edge, had to get beyond the upturned burning vehicles and the dead and dying men lying on the beach. He kept his eyes fixed on the hundreds of boats of every shape and size anchored in the water: barges and sailing yachts, naval destroyers and passenger liners.

“An incredible adventure and great page turner!”

“Osborne creates a terrifically atmospheric read, and builds the story to a brilliant & moving climax.”

Author notes

'I was born in 1960 - only 15 years after World War II had ended. Of course now it might seem like ancient history, but when I was growing up it was very relevant. A lot of the books being written in the 60s and a lot of the great war films such as Battle for Britain and Where Eagles Dare were being made when I was a child. That captured my interest, and I've always enjoyed history. Since I’ve become an adult I’ve kept reading about the subject. It’s an amazing part of history, for terrible reasons, but there are also incredible stories to be told.'
